Did you know that only 2.8% of kids in care will go on attend university, compared to 38% of the general population?
As adults, many spiral into homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, criminality, and are ultimately chained to a lifetime of welfare dependency. The unemployment rate for young care leavers is more than three times the national average for people their age.
The Why Not You Project aims to address these appalling outcomes by helping more care experienced young people enter university and complete their course.
We work with universities to help them understand the needs of care leavers, design programs of support, and connect them with other stakeholders working in this space. We are not consultants, we are simply here to help.
Your institution can get involved by joining a growing number of Australian universities providing targeted support for bright young people in care considering higher education. It doesn't need to cost much, and it will make a huge difference to kids who really need it.
